I cheated. I got my birthday present yesterday, and read it. My lovely, lovely sister and lovely, lovely friend bought me Hellblazer: All His Engines.

The funny thing is, I'm comparing it to the movie Constantine, and I see several similarities:

1. The action takes place in L.A.
2. Chas is driving John around, being sort of an assistant
3. There's a girl's soul in peril
4. Someone's threatening to create Hell on Earth

So why is All His Engines so much better than that travesty of a movie?

Well, first off, this is the John and Chas that I know. It starts in England, but moves on to L.A. Chas is a bruiser, and the girl in peril is his granddaughter. Which, of course, creates John's motivation for getting involved.

Second, there's no fucking Holy Shotgun. John makes deals and cons the bad guys into doing what he wants. Pure bliss.

Third, no Keanu. Trust me, this is important.

Fourth, it was written by Mike Carey, and after I started reading Lucifer, I worship Mike Carey. He can weave a plot like few others. It's tight, it entertaining, and it's Constantine, which was something the movie didn't do.

All in all, I'm happy. I've read it twice already, and will read it a few more times before I put it away - only to take it out and read again.
